Ilorin International Airport (IATA: ILR, ICAO: DNIL) is an airport serving Ilorin, a city in Kwara State of Nigeria. The Ilorin non-directional beacon (Ident: IL) is located on the field. The Ilorin VOR-DME (Ident: ILR) is located 4.9 nautical miles (9.1 km) southwest of the airport.

History of Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport

This was established in 1936. It is notable as the oldest airport in Nigeria

MAKIA is located in the ancient city of Kano in the Northern part of the country. In the 1980s, the airport was named after a prominent Kano-born Nigerian statesman, Mallam Aminu Kano, a nationalist, politician and dogged fighter for the poor masses in the country.

MAKIA is one of the country’s oldest international airports. Apart from being a major transit point for the annual Muslim Haji to Mecca, MAKIA is a major connection point for air travellers going from Northern Nigeria to different parts of the world.

Facilities

The airport serves civilian and military flights. Runway 06/24 is mainly used for civilian flights, while runway 05/23 primarily serves the Nigerian Air Force base at the south side of the airport. Runway 05/23 was in use for all operations when the main runway was rehabilitated in the beginning of the 21st century. The terminal facilities lie between the two runways.

The Kano VOR-DME (ident: KAN) and non-directional beacons (idents: KO and AO) are located on the field.

The main terminal with the control tower serves international flights and domestic services operated by Arik Air. Facilities in the departure lounge are minimal, with a newsstand near the check-in counter and a small bar at airside. There is a small VIP lounge for business class passengers. Duty-free shops are currently closed. There is a small bar and a post office in the arrivals hall.

On the south side of the airport, along runway 06/24, is the domestic terminal currently serving operations of IRS Airlines. Facilities include a newsstand and small bar.

Construction of a new domestic terminal, adjacent to the main terminal building, started in the beginning of the 21st century. Construction was abandoned but was resumed. The operator of the airport, Federal Airports Authority Nigeria (FAAN), saw the completion of the new terminal in November 2009. It was commissioned on May 2011.

Incidents

  • On 24 June 1956, a BOAC four-engine Canadair C-4 Argonaut airliner crashed on departure from Kano International. Of the 45 passengers and crew on board, only 13 survived.
  • On 22 January 1973, the Kano Air Disaster occurred – an Alia Boeing 707-320C crashed at Kano International while attempting to make a landing in high winds. 176 of the 202 passengers and crew on board were killed. It was and remains the worst aviation disaster in the history of Nigeria.
  • On 4 May 2002, EAS Airlines Flight 4226, a BAC 1-11-500 twin-engine jet crashed upon take-off from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, killing 71 passengers and crew on board as well as 78 more on the ground into whose houses the plane had crashed.

Kaduna Airport (IATA: KAD, ICAO: DNKA) is an airport serving Kaduna, the capital of Kaduna State in Nigeria. The airport is around 22 kilometres (14 mi) northwest of the city. The airport opened in 1982.

The Kaduna VOR-DME (Ident: KDA) and two non-directional beacons (Ident: KL and KC) are located off the approach end of Runway 05. The runway length does not include 116 metres (381 ft) displaced thresholds on each end of the runway.

Kaduna also has an older airport located on the northern edge of the city.

Accidents and Incidents

  • Nigeria Airways Flight 357 (1995) took place at the airport
  • On 20 August 2010, Chanchangi Airlines Flight 334, operated by Boeing 737-200 5N-BIF struck the localizer antenna and landed short of the runway. Several passengers were slightly injured and the aircraft was substantially damaged. Chanchangi Airlines again suspended operations following the accident.

About Enugu State

Enugu, usually referred to as Enugu State to distinguish it from the city of Enugu, is a state in southeastern Nigeria, created in 1991 from part of the old Anambra State. Its capital and largest city is Enugu, from which the state derives its name. The principal cities in the state are Enugu, Nsukka, Agbani and Awgu.

Akanu Ibiam International Airport (IATA: ENU, ICAO: DNEN), also known as Enugu Airportis an airport serving Enugu, the capital city of Enugu State of Nigeria, and nearby cities, such as Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka, Abakaliki, Nsukka, Okigwe, Afikpo, Ugep, Orlu, Idah, Otukpo and Ogoja. The airport is named after the late Akanu Ibiam (1906-1995), a Medical Doctor and Statesman who hailed from Afikpo in Ebonyi State.

The airport was closed on February 10, 2010, by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for the first phase of major renovation and expansion works. The airport was re-opened on 16 December 2010, but the second and third phase of the construction work is still ongoing. The airport is being prepared for its new status as an international airport.

The Enugu VOR-DME (Ident: ENG) and non-directional beacon (Ident: EN) are located off the approach end of Runway 26. The VOR is 2.6 nautical miles (4.8 km) out, and the NDB is 1.8 nautical miles (3.3 km) out.
